This talk gathers three filmmakers who actively resist power through their art.
In Revolutionaries Never Die, Mohanad Yaqubi uses footage shot by Lebanese journalist and filmmaker Jocelyn Saab, who risked her life to preserve these images; Yaqubi brings them into the present, connecting their histories through personal loss.
In They're Here, Laura Poitras and Rachel Lauren Mueller confront violence in the here & now. Combining their footage with video shot by Minneapolis residents, they show people documenting ICE raids, and how images can serve collective resistance.
In Forest Up in the Mountain, Sofía Bordenave probes a 2017 incident of a Mapucho man killed by security forces. Their trial forms the spine of a broader story about systemic violence against the Indigenous population and colonial dispossession.
Bordenave will give an overview of the erosion of human rights and freedoms in Argentina, followed by discussion of filmmaking methods, ethical responsibilities and the power (and limits) of artistic resistance.
Moderator: Abby Sun (Independent journalist)
Speakers: Sofía Bordenave (Director, Forest Up in the Mountain), Mohanad Yaqubi (Director, Revolutionaries Never Die), Laura Poitras (Director, They're Here)
