In these politically charged times, the role of PR/Marketing for all documentary films goes way beyond just ‘making noise’. From socio-political movies to personal/intimate stories, the art of clearing the ground for a sensitive, sophisticated dialogue around important work is a delicate proposition: one that requires a deep level of involvement across the filmmaking team, and which in these ever-changing times can often involve a specialized PR group and global adjustments. The best of these groups can play a dual role: both protecting the film, the team, and the messaging, while essentially setting productive communications boundaries and a common film language around the project. They can radiate the film, the filmmakers, and the message of the film outwards.
