IDFAcademy Talk: Kazuhiro Soda
IDFAcademy Talk: Kazuhiro Soda
Description
In the tradition of observational cinema, Kazuhiro Soda’s films offer a unique approach to the relationship between filmmaker, subject, and audience. Breaking away from the constraints he experienced in television production, Soda developed his own distinctive method, formalized in his Ten Commandments'' of observational filmmaking. Rather than adopting a neutral or detached perspective, he engages deeply with his characters, uncovering the hidden layers of their lives through patient observation.

In conversation with film critic Dana Linssen, Soda will discuss his filmmaking philosophy, including his ability to foster trust with his characters. The discussion will explore his intuitive filming process and his commitment to creating films that invite audiences to attentively observe seemingly simple aspects of life, discovering moments of profundity along the way. How does he construct a precise narrative only after the whole shooting process is complete? What choices does he make in framing his characters to allow him to translate a particular vision of reality to his audiences?
