IDFA Meets is collaborating with MacGuffin, the interdisciplinary publication that delves into the hidden stories, cultural meanings, and design significance of everyday objects.
In conjunction with MacGuffin's latest issue, we explore the impact of ‘the wall’—not merely as a physical barrier dividing space, but as a social and political boundary with a profound psychological impact. This event focuses specifically on the West Bank Wall. Through two films, Infiltrators and Rule of Stone, as well as talks, we unravel how these walls embody larger forces that separate, control, and define communities—forces that are imposed, challenged, and, at times, transcended. We examine the intricate dynamics behind building these barriers, revealing the complexities of exclusion, confinement, and the struggle for freedom.
Visitors can watch the films separately, but it is recommended to view them as a diptych. Infiltrators starts at 19:00, followed by a Q&A with Khaled Jarrar. Rule of Stone starts at 21:30.
Before and in between the two IDFA Meets MacGuffin screenings, Het Podium will become a MacGuffin-themed reading room. Here, you can explore and purchase current and past issues of the magazine, surrounded by text and imagery from artists Saber Javanmard, and Palestinian (diaspora) artist Rasha Dakkak, Mariam Shamma, and Ameed Abdelhadi. Be sure to look out for a special, one-time mini-publication created in celebration of this collaboration.
Admission to Het Podium is free from 18:30 to 23:00.
Infiltrators
The Palestinians’ search for openings in the wall at the Qalandia checkpoint is nerve-racking. Unsentimentally, Khaled Jarrar shows both the humiliation and the resistance against the absurdity and repression that define daily life.
Rule of Stone
If Jerusalem Stone could speak, it would tell a story of civil occupation and expansion. From Imperial British bylaws to the Israeli annexation of East Jerusalem, and architecture’s role in covering the city’s history in a thin coat of limestone.
