Description
update November 13: Charlie Shackleton has withdrawn his film Lateral from the festival, and will no longer be part of this screening.
Join us for the last DocLab live event of this festival, as IDFA's new media program ventures from virtual reality headsets and AI installations into the black box of cinema for a captivating double bill.
Main event is the screening of the groundbreaking 1982 documentary Koyaanisqatsi, introduced by its iconic director Godfrey Reggio and AI artist John Fitzgerald. This screening of Koyaanisqatsi accompanies the world premiere of The Vivid Unknown, an interactive video installation created by Fitzgerald and Reggio and showing in IDFA DocLab’s Phenomenal Friction Exhibition in Brakke Grond from 10-19 November (free admission). Inspired by Koyaanisqatsi’s main themes and powered by a generative AI model trained on the Reggio’s cinematic universe, the interactive installation dynamically responds to your presence and movements, creating an unparalleled collective viewing experience.
The main feature is preceded by the 3D short film Lateral by Charlie Shackleton, a charming filmic experiment that magically manages to unlock and add a third dimension to classic 2D shots from cinematic history. The screening of Lateral includes 3D glasses and a live introduction by the filmmaker.
