Co-production regulations often mandate that rights and control mirror national expenditure, creating a structural bonus for high-capacity partners regardless of who actually originated the film and who does the work. This session moves beyond diagnosis into action and solutions. Through case studies, we aim to encourage better practices for navigating rigid pro-rata rules, correct imbalances caused by cost disparities between countries, and explore what it takes to make these structures hold up in practice.
The session delivers tools producers can adapt to their own projects: legal instruments for redistributing revenue based on contribution rather than spend, methods for normalizing costs across different production economies, and frameworks for testing a fund's flexibility before committing to a partnership.
The panel brings together producers who have tested these approaches alongside fund representatives who can speak to what their institutions can and cannot currently accept. The discussion moves from identifying specific regulatory barriers to designing deals within (and around) existing rules.
