Industry Talk: Yolande Zauberman on her filmmaking career
Industry Talk: Yolande Zauberman on her filmmaking career
Description

Both in her fiction and documentary films, French director Yolande Zauberman has made a career by breaking social taboos from a deeply humanistic standpoint. In her first film, Classified People (1987), she dealt with the violence of apartheid in South Africa, while in Caste Criminelle (1990), she explored lives of Indians stigmatized for not submitting to British rule. She has dealt extensively and incisively with the most intimate issues, such as pedophilia inflicted by rabbis in M (2018) and the sex lives of Arab citizens of Israel in Would You Have Sex with an Arab? (2011). This film is screening at IDFA as part of the Dead Angle: Borders program, while her latest documentary, The Belle from Gaza, dealing with Arab trans sex workers in Tel Aviv and which world-premiered at Cannes, screens in Best of Fests. Her approach, based on private lives, and with a firm belief in the political power of intimacy, will be one of the topics of the talk during which she will reflect on her whole career, as well as her experience with authors' rights and royalties.
