Dutch Docs Day brings together professionals from the Dutch documentary industry to critically reflect on the current state of documentary production in the Netherlands. We see that the Netherlands boasts successful festival films. In addition, more series are being made that aim to appeal to a wider audience. Meanwhile, the industry is implementing fair pay and absorbing inflation and catching up to produce on higher and healthier budgets. Ambitions for content and production values are high. At the same time, there is a funding crunch, which calls for a reality check. What films do we think should be made? What is our responsibility in this era in terms of stories that need to be told? Should we be more radical, artistically and in terms of content? If we say, ‘less is more’ (or ‘make less for higher budgets’), then the follow-up question is: more of what?
Participants will discuss these topics in the morning during round table sessions with their peers. In the afternoon, we offer a plenary program with a keynote and case studies exploring the role of documentary filmmakers in shaping the social debate.
This program is organized by The Netherlands Film Fund, NPO, NAPA, DDG, DAFF, SEE NL & IDFA.
