DocLab Live: Sensory Friction
DocLab Live: Sensory Friction
Description
Join us for an immersive evening with artists talks about artworks that expose and stretch the boundaries of our individual perceptions. With projects exploring unpredictable and convoluted corridors of our bodies, our brains and the machines around us. Such as Turbulence, a unique mixed reality project exploring movement, disembodiment, and the fragility of perception, drawn from XR artist Ben Joseph Andrews’ personal experience with a brain condition characterized as ‘the opposite of déjà vu’. In the award winning VR project Emperor, Marion Burger movingly invites us to alternate between a father who has lost his speech to aphasia, and a daughter who is trying to communicate and connect with him. Meanwhile Aluta Null, winner of the Faku’gesi XR award, uses Augmented Reality and dark humor to unlock the complexity of mental health in PHANTOM, and Lauren Lee McCarthy and Kyle McDonald present Voice in My Head, allowing us to hear everything we never knew we wanted to say in real-time. Finally, a sneak peak into the intense immersive dance performance One Two, which brings dancers and audiences together in total sensory deprivation.

Emperor

Emperor

Monochrome animations inspired by pencil drawings put you inside the brain of a person with aphasia. In this interactive VR, you experience the role of a father who has lost his speech, and the story of his daughter who is trying to communicate with him.

Turbulence: Jamais Vu

Turbulence: Jamais Vu

In this mixed reality work, you experience with a VR headset what it is like when reality suddenly seems new and different. How does this feeling of disorientation and alienation affect your image of your environment, of the material world, of yourself?
PHANTOM

PHANTOM

Black humor may be the best weapon against the slippery emotions you experience if you’re struggling with mental health problems or addiction. This interactive experience tries to provide insight into these complex issues using AR.
Voice in My Head

Voice in My Head

An interactive installation in which ChatGPT becomes a voice in your head to influence your social reality. The chatbot listens in on your conversations and responds. And if you’re at a loss, it offers plenty of knowledge for you to draw on.
One Two

One Two

Audience participants in this immersive dance performance are plunged into the life cycle of humans as social animals. Take part in a primeval ritual involving nothing more than music, rhythmic breathing and a little smoke.
