The idea of a fair co-production might seem like a utopia due to the incredibly complex intertwining of a multitude of factors. Firstly, there is the immediate question of financial inequality between partners in the Global North and South, largely determining the power balance. Secondly, rules and regulations of national and international funds and bilateral treaties are mostly based on the requirements of the fiction industry, leaving out the lower budgeted and ethically sensitive documentaries. And thirdly, the question of ownership of the story and the director's voice has to be navigated by co-producers in the home country and those from richer territories.
But producers seasoned in untangling this complicated web of issues are finding creative ways to reduce the inequality and preserve the voice of the director and cultural traits of the film's theme. Speakers from Africa, Europe, and Latin America will convey their experiences and creative solutions they are coming up with in order to reach this goal, with an angle on the South-South collaborations as an emerging model for just and balanced productions.
Moderator: Nora Philippe (EURODOC)
