For twenty years, cultural spaces—cinemas to theaters, museums to opera houses, galleries to concert venues—scrambled to respond to the digital revolution. Audiences moved online, business models changed, "the culture of going out" was in near-constant flux. New interactive and immersive art forms emerged and had success with niche festival audiences. But many groundbreaking projects were lost, broken, and forgotten.
How can we go beyond preserving the lost and broken heritage of new media to reinventing (and stabilizing) what a collective theatrical experience can be? More than capturing and archiving, potential lies in creating exciting new presentation formats to distribute and tour across existing venues. Audiences are here for VR in opera, games in theater, interactive documentaries in cinemas—let’s figure out how to deliver these.
Join immersive industry insiders with artist, venue, and tech perspectives to grapple with the conundrum of preserving and spreading new media without losing its spark.
