While awaiting trial, Nathan started his own political party and at 23, became the youngest lawmaker in Hong Kong’s history. Nine months later, the government sent him to prison in an attempt to quash his democracy movement. But when the government tried to pass a law allowing dissidents to be extradited to China, the next generation of protestors inspired by Nathan took to the streets believing that violence is their only option.
