Synopsis

When the entire world was in quarantine, Kenyan journalism student Elsa kept her spirits up by posting funny videos on Instagram. In short witty monologues, she commented with a contagious laugh on the pandemic, invariably playing with sunglasses and crunching on chips. Her feisty, plain-speaking mockery was exactly what people needed at the time, and Elsa became an Instagram phenomenon.

We now follow Elsa during a stay in New York, where she is preparing for a career as a comedian. She has fun trying on clothes in vintage shops and playing chess in the park—apart from being a comic, she is also a chess champion. In voice-over, she talks about her new identity as a role model for boundless self-confidence and the art of “being yourself”—but also about the toll it has taken on her.

Each year, approximately ten thousand high school and college students visit the IDFA school programs to discover creative documentaries with impact.
