After years of absence, and in a period of grief and loss, Garifuna dancer Jorge García leaves the city in Honduras to travel back to the Afro-Caribbean Garifuna community of his youth. There, through conversation, music, and rhythmic dance, he reconnects with a part of himself that he had lost for so long.
As both subject and co-director, Jorge García helped shape this healing, creative, and spiritual film. Often observational, this filmed personal journey is also powerfully immersive, filled with metaphorical dream sequences. Scenes of Jorge García dancing in the landscape of his ancestors alternate with others in which he calls his life partner back home and shares his deepest experiences with her. The sound design features songs about grief, exile, and resilience, accompanied by traditional musical instruments, including a turtle shell, a donkey’s jawbone, and Garifuna drums.
Where the Sun is Born is both the personal story of a man searching for the building blocks of his identity and a broader portrait of the rich culture of a proud people.
