Around 20 years after they first met in Sardinia, Ibu, orginally from Senegal, moves in with his friend Mietta, a retired judge in Milan. When Ibu's pregnant wife, Bousso, later joins them, what begins as an act of hospitality develops into a long-term arrangement, and Mietta buys a larger apartment for all of them to live in. While Ibu is often away for work, the young Bousso and the older Mietta share their daily lives. Personal differences soon rise to the surface.
We follow the evolution of the household over several years. As little Khadim grows up and Mietta confronts the vulnerabilities that come with age, tensions arise over parenting, privacy, and dependence. Conversations about adding to the family, Italian citizenship, and the power dynamics within the home lay bare the complexity of their relationships.
Through intimate observation and direct questions from the filmmaker, the film captures the fragile balance between hospitality and autonomy, ultimately becoming a human portrait of migration, the search for a home, and the building of a family beyond blood ties.
