Another Place

Renée fled Thailand in 2022 after sharing a post on Facebook. In the VR experience Another Place, she finds herself in Paris, waiting for the outcome of her asylum application. Through her eyes, you wander the streets at night, while her voice-over testifies to the endless waiting. She is a trans woman, misses her cats, and muses about the life she left behind.

Armed with only a phone, Renée wanders along dark alleyways in this 3D world. Sometimes she encounters shadowy figures who are unable or unwilling to help her. You share her longing for home, for the smell of Thai food trucks and the sound of her cats purring.

From Renée’s first-person perspective, you experience her constant rejection and how she tries to find connection in a world that is new to her. Her only lifeline is her phone, but even when she searches for shelter via a dating app, she is immediately confronted by transphobic remarks. Renée’s journey is a ghost story about the lost souls in our world, searching for a place where they can truly be seen.
