German actor Ingrid Caven worked extensively with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and was married to him for a time as well. She was also closely associated with fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, and built a career as a cabaret singer. In Sixteen Moments of My Life, Caven performs at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris, accompanied by the Catalan electronic band Molforts.
For director Albert Serra (Pacifiction, Tardes de soledad), this is much more than a concert film. He was behind the musical venture from the outset, having introduced Caven, a friend of his, to Molforts. In the following years he remained the driving force behind the collaboration. He also initiated the one-off concert in Paris, where Caven has lived for almost 50 years, and filmed it using five cameras.
Serra fans will likely recognize the atmospheric sound of Molforts, who have been composing distinctive soundtracks for Serra’s films for years. Caven adds her unique voice and personal lyrics in this musical self-portrait and cinematic live experience.
