Synopsis

“What is it you call Freedom? What is it you call Power? What is it you call Victory? When you fail to understand that you cannot just harm some place and think it is separate from you – it is not,” the Earth Spirit declares. Proudly wearing a royal robe made from parts of electrical appliances, she stands on top of a vast rubbish tip, amid the stench, the marabou storks and the junk.

Pop video aesthetics, music and poetry blend to form a kind of Afrofuturist activist performance art, in which workers who have to wade through the trash angrily demand respect and awareness, as rich countries continue to abuse Africa by extracting its valuable raw materials and treating it as a rubbish dump.

Indignant, angry and visually fascinating, Terra Mater calls the world to account. Because Africa is suffering from the consequences of capitalism, colonialism and the destruction of nature.
