DocLab Exhibition
DocLab Exhibition
Description

Documentary is more than film on a screen. De Brakke Grond is the heart of IDFA DocLab: Shared Realities, featuring an exhibition of more than 20 interactive artworks exploring how realities are created, influence one another, and are shared. From games and VR to installations that defy easy categorization, some works invite you into an intimate, individual experience, while others unfold through interaction with others or simply by watching. Explore the exhibition at your own pace and decide where to spend your time.

Is the VR Gallery showing as sold out online? You can still visit the rest of the exhibition! The VR Gallery also has one free walk-in spot, for which you can queue on site.

The Archive Arcade brings back three works from previous DocLab editions that had become inaccessible due to outdated technology. You can drop in without a separate ticket.

During the DocLab Playrooms, meet artists, try out prototypes, and join the conversation. On November 14, 16 and 17, you can drop by anytime between 3:00 and 7:00 PM, with no fixed start times.

Admission to the exhibition is free, but you do need an entry ticket. You can get one online in advance or on site using your smartphone.

Some experiences require a separate ticket and have limited capacity. Check which works require advance booking here and plan your visit accordingly.

All the Downtime (Individual Experience)

All the Downtime (Individual Experience)

With a photobook in hand and an accompanying soundtrack, you are guided through a distribution center controlled by algorithms. A power outage creates an unexpected opening for playfulness, humanity, and defiance.
ESHRAQ

ESHRAQ

Not a game you can complete, but a “cognitive playground” of constant variation, inspired by the Illuminationist philosophy of the 12th-century Persian philosopher Shahab al-Din Suhrawardi.
The Love Files

The Love Files

As a visitor to this archive, you are handed a “love file” submitted by a transnational couple, whose relationship you have to assess as part of an application for a residence permit. Is the evidence they have provided credible or not? Why?
Palimpsest

Palimpsest

Four fictional beings, once part of stories that have long since disappeared, wander through a desolate landscape. In this hybrid game and installation, one player’s actions affect the film watched by everyone else.
Apocalypse Early Warning System

Apocalypse Early Warning System

A wry and effective early-warning system for a nuclear attack, based on publicly available flight data for private jets. If the super-rich suddenly take to the skies, you can bet that something’s seriously wrong.
Being in You

Being in You

Singer-songwriter Cat Janice, who died in 2024, invites you into a tender, physical duet between the living and the no-longer-living. This mixed reality experience feels like an echo of her life.
Interviews with Two Strangers

Interviews with Two Strangers

Nine veteran New York theater artists each have two conversations: one in person with artist Carrie Sijia Wang and one with a text-based chatbot impersonating her. Both are presented simultaneously in this video installation.

Hello You

Hello You

An experiment using technology to foster self-acceptance. The aim is to create a more imaginative, kinder self-image, rather than fueling self-criticism and stress in the futile pursuit of “perfection.”
My Father is Turning into Soil

My Father is Turning into Soil

Artist Noa Jansma seeks an earthly afterlife in this installation presenting recordings of microscopic life in her father’s grave. Visitors can also taste root vegetables grown in that same soil if they choose.

Plum Road Tea Dream

Plum Road Tea Dream

On a deliberately paced walk through fragmented virtual spaces, a semi-autobiographical story unfolds about belonging and grief.

Twenty Twenty-Five

Twenty Twenty-Five

The closer you get to your digital reflection in this video installation, the more details you see in the hundreds of photographs that make up that reflection. An archive of aerial bombardments from 2025 turns your body into an index of destruction.

Archive Arcade: Natalie’s Trifecta

Archive Arcade: Natalie’s Trifecta

In this VR experience, South African multi-disciplinary artist Natalie Paneng invites you into the three worlds that make up her artistic practice: a virtual gallery, her studio, and the playful dreamworld that fuels her work.

Archive Arcade: Notes on Blindness: Into Darkness VR

Archive Arcade: Notes on Blindness: Into Darkness VR

What’s it like to be blind? An enchanting, award-winning interactive VR experience, based on the audio diary of author and theologian John Hull—a journey into a world beyond sight.
Hive Mind Pong

Hive Mind Pong

A fresh take on a audience experiment: play one game with a group of people. Everyone can join in, but how much control do you have when technology decides how your voice counts?
Archive Arcade: Thanatorama

Archive Arcade: Thanatorama

Who has never fantasized about attending their own funeral? This dark and lyrical web documentary offers the chance, with an interactive photo story about funeral directors, coffin makers, and masters of ceremonies.
Lost Hood

Lost Hood

The resistance of times past comes back to life on Spuistraat in central Amsterdam, where gentrification has hit hard. Through augmented reality, the countercultures of the past—from squatters to the Kabouters—reclaim the public space.
