Synopsis

The makers began with a deceptively simple question: What if time had a physical form? It might look something like this dome projection—a sensory immersion in algorithmically generated image and sound moving together, layer upon layer, and yet perceived as a single unified field.

Images and sounds merge, rhythms shift and textures change, harmoniously and musically. Together they form a cosmic kaleidoscope that sometimes evokes organic forms—dots, lines and patterns conjure up the sea, sand, or clouds—without ever becoming anything specific.

Slowly, the audiovisual projection takes over your sense of time. Instead of a conventional linear narrative, Temporal Strata offers a hypnotic manipulation of duration, not as an objective measure but as a subjective experience. Some visitors may feel like dancing, others like meditating, with each breath echoing an immeasurable shared moment.

Marking its 20th edition, IDFA DocLab: Shared Realities looks back on two decades of pioneering interactive and immersive documentary art, while asking: In a world where it has become easier than ever to retreat into realities of our own making, can we still commit to sharing one?
