Greenlandic-Canadian Inuk artist Laakkuluk invites you in to be a part of an Inuit utopia on a tiny circumpolar island republic of lovers, just south of the North Pole. Using 360-degree video footage, live action, visual effects, and animation, this vivid VR experience creates an exuberant collage and a political commentary on the Arctic, centring Inuit culture throughout. You are accompanied by two guides: spiritual, animated creatures that keep reappearing to help you—or compel you—to make choices, designed to make you think about what your place is in the Arctic and amongst Inuit.
Laakkuluk proclaimed an imaginary republic on Tartupaluk, a tiny, uninhabited island located right on the geographical boundary between the northernmost tip of Canada and Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat). As president of the republic she seeks an end to the interminable disputes over who the little piece of land actually belongs to, instead advocating rapprochement and connection. Which path will you choose?
