At first, you are still in the real world, albeit wearing a VR headset. But step over the threshold, and you enter a virtual void, populated by the other participants in this collective VR experience. Each visitor appears as a cluster of points of light and connecting lines. These lines can break free or link up with the points belonging to others. Shifting Connections is emphatically not an individual experience: it needs other people to come alive. Gradually, an ever more complex web of lines and nodes emerges, responding to your movements and inviting you to reshape it as you please.
In his acclaimed previous work Traversing the Mist (IDFA DocLab 2023), Taiwanese theater, film, and extended reality artist Tungyen Chou placed participants in the middle of a surreal gay sauna. This new work is more abstract and playful, a subtle celebration of the living human network we are all part of, and which constantly reforms and rearranges itself.
