Filmmaker and artist Rico Wong is one of the young people who were arrested during the protests in Hong Kong in 2019-2020. Years later, Wong reflects on that period with friends from that time. Using a lo-fi handheld camera, he films them watching footage of traumatic experiences and their reactions, whether it's loaded silences, humour or horror.
He also documents them reliving their activities of those earlier years—hanging around, spray-painting graffiti—and reflecting on their current situations. In doing so, they create a space for events which have left deep wounds—sometimes literally—and went unmentioned until now, as well as emotions that were repressed for a variety of reasons.
Compact Disc won the New Vision Award at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen, as well as the Grand Prize Visionary Award and a Special Mention in the Asian Competition at the Taiwan International Documentary Festival.
