On October 7, 2023, Israeli filmmaker Anet Even lost her home and friends in the Hamas attack on Kibbutz Nir Oz. Now, she returns to document what remains there—destroyed homes and the stench of death—and what is happening on the other side of the barrier that has stood there since the 1990s. A genocide is taking place in real time, with bombs striking as she films.
The filmmaker does not exempt herself from scrutiny: in voice-over, she reflects on her own conflicted relationship with the events and her country. She is a fervent opponent of the current government, but does not know how to channel that opposition. Her dilemmas emerge in conversations with her more activist friend Ariel Cypel, a playwright living in Paris.
Anet Even films her attempts to enter Gaza and documents a gathering of settlers who plan to build in Gaza and proclaim this by chanting, “Occupy, expel, settle.” An introspective and revealing film essay on loss, grief, revenge, dehumanization and indifference.
