A Woman's Place Is Everywhere
For as long as they can remember, twin sisters Emilija and Ona have lived with their mother in a former warehouse in the now-popular Williamsburg neighborhood of New York. With the death of their mother—a Lithuanian artist, feminist, and dancer—the twins must confront some stark realities: they are drawn into an eviction battle with their landlord, and Ona is pregnant. In discussing the future, they navigate grief while trying to hold on to their mother’s memory and the home they built together.
Filmmaker Fanny Texier followed the pair intermittently over a period of three years, a time of intense emotion and change, including Ona becoming a mother. The two seem barely aware of the camera; they argue and lose themselves when playing the piano. A picture emerges of the bond between the two sisters, and of their loving relationship with their mother. The backdrop to this family portrait is the gentrification of the neighborhood and changes in society that leave less and less room for unconventional ways of life.
