Beneath Which Rivers Flow
A boy stands in a river with his buffalo, leaning lovingly on the animal’s back while slowly petting it. Both appear to be enjoying each other’s company, taking in the serenity of their surroundings. Their bond is endearing and calming, for them and us while we’re watching this scene. Ibrahim lives in the peaceful, mesmerizing marshlands of southern Iraq.
Yet, his eyes reveal tension, a suspense that is tangible throughout the film. Ibrahim is facing forces beyond his control that threaten not only his way of life but also the one living creature he truly understands.
Beneath Which Rivers Flow is a visually stunning film that captures its protagonist, his family and their surroundings in an authentic way. Director Ali Yahya engages us in his artistic vision without the need for words. His storytelling allows room for Ibrahim rather than forcing him into a narrative. His refreshing and intriguing look at Iraq also allows us to wonder and construct our own perspective on this story.
