Some of You Fucked Eva
In 2002, something strange happened at a high school in North Carolina—a group of cheerleaders all fainted at the same time. ”They dropped like flies. All of them,” says one of the teens, recalling the incident. Some of You Fucked Eva revolves around this enigma. But unlike other films with a mystery, this one doesn’t seem to have any desire to solve it. Rather, it offers a strange, engaging and artistic dark trip that speaks to your gut.
Images of the girls’ cheerleading practice sessions are slowed down. Put on repeat. We are forced to look again and dismantle the familiar imagery of high school movies. Young director Lilith Grasmug repeatedly plays with the stereotypes that are projected on these girls and their bodies, revealing the violence often embedded in these representations. She creates an alternate universe that we feel instead of see.
Whether we are watching dark clouds, a deer running through empty school hallways or footage from prom—the transitions feel effortless and effective, provoking new assumptions, questions and suspense. It’s a visual experiment that works, even if you can’t quite articulate why.
