When former world champion wrestler Pierre Kelekele Lituka dies, he is buried in Congo with little fanfare—much to the anger and dismay of his admirers. To honor the man and his 1974 achievement, the New Generation wrestling club announces a grand sporting event in the “catch wrestling” tradition.
The wrestlers taking part are also getting on in years, so they need intensive training to get in shape and perfect their moves for the tournament. In the award-winning, lovingly made film Wrestlers, the camera follows their preparations—showcasing the multifaceted nature of this sport, which blends technical holds with comic interludes and theatricality, much to the delight of the practice-match audiences.
While Kelekele’s family members share memories and proudly present rare archival footage, the wrestlers work up a sweat. Injuries are treated, costumes selected, traditional rituals and prayers performed—all in service of creating a fitting tribute to their beloved sports hero.
